Simple Tips for Fall Prevention

Falls can put you or a loved one at risk of serious injury, but fall prevention is a must for those over the age of 65. With these simple tips, you’ll have the opportunity to reduce your fall risk and/or protect your loved ones from a serious fall injury.

Tip #1: Talk to your healthcare provider

By meeting with your physician regularly, you can review your current medications that can cause dizziness or balance problems. Anytime you begin a new prescription, ask your pharmacist about the side effects and any interactions with your current medications.

Tip #2: Work with your Physical Therapist on an exercise program specific to you

A physical therapist should be a part of your healthcare team. Exercise is critical in maintaining balance and a physical therapist can work with you to develop an exercise program that will improve your overall mobility. They will also provide you tips on the correct ways to move to avoid injury as well as provide information on modifications around your home.

Tip #3: Tidying up around your home

By making small changes to your home, you’ll be able to create a safer living space. Below are a few helpful reminders when tidying up around the house.

  • Remove throw rugs as they can be a tripping hazard.
  • Place a lamp on your nightstand, so you can easily access it if needed.
  • Repair loose, wooden floorboards and carpeting for an even walking surface.
  • Use nonslip mats in your bathtub. You can also have a bath seat or bar installed for added support.

Tip #4: Switching up your shoes

Consider swapping out your house slippers, stockings, or sandals with a supportive pair of nonskid tennis shoes. Having the right kind of shoes can also help alleviate joint pain. Your physical therapist can advise you on the best footwear alternatives.

Tip #5: Take your time

If you tend to feel lightheaded when you stand up too quickly, make sure to take your time getting up. When you first wake up each morning, it may help to sit up first, count to 10, and then try to stand up.
