Summer is nearing an end, which means Tucson students are headed back to school. To help students return to school safely, we’re sharing some tips ranging from stretching, posture, and concussion prevention.
Back to School Tip #1: Technology and Posture
It’s been coined as the term “text neck” and when you are constantly using your phone or technology it’s easy to slump into this position—neck slumped forward with shoulders rounded. Simple, yet effective, the shoulder blade squeeze and neck stretch can help prevent your student from getting text neck.
Back to School Tip #2: Backpacks
Lugging around their books and school supplies can easily become an overuse injury if the backpack is not properly worn. Start by having your student use both straps to evenly distribute weight, which helps prevent strain on the back. When packing the backpack, try to put the heaviest items at the bottom and arrange them so they don’t slide, and remember to simplify—if it’s not necessary, keep it out.
Back to School Tip #3: Hydration
Especially in Arizona, and Tucson for that matter, it’s important to stay properly hydrated. Make sure your Tucson student is hydrating throughout the day, especially before and after workouts. And hydration isn’t just in H20—pack a lunch with water-packed foods such as bell peppers, watermelon, and grapes.
Back to School Tip #4: Concussions
Back to school often means back to sports. It’s important to make sure your athlete is aware of the symptoms of a concussion. You’ll want to work with your schools’ coach, athletic trainers, medical team, and even a physical therapist if your athlete does get a concussion. ProActive Physical Therapy is here to help with prevention, as well as getting your athlete back to play safely after having a concussion.
