Overview of the Problem: There has been an alarming increase in non-contact injuries in youth sports that began in the mid-90s. As young athletes began to participate more in competitive sports with more intensity, there was a disproportionate increase in injuries in non-contact actions, or the actions of deceleration and explosive directional changes. As a result of this statistical increase, significant attention has been dedicated to this problem in the medical community, including research to investigate the reason for the increase. The research has led to an improved understanding of the problems contributing to this increase, especially in female ACL injuries and has lead to more effective training programs to address these problems. Every coach and parent is concerned with health of the young athlete. An injured athlete suffers the challenge of the physical pain and discomfort of the injury, not to mention the emotional challenge of not contributing to the team and their role in their social and family network. The loss of a key player to an injury can also create a tremendous strain on the team. The family of the injured athlete suffers the burden of the cost of the injury, plus the change in routine to accommodate the necessary treatments and rehabilitation. Overview of the Solutions: The research that helped to identify the problem has lead to research that has proven an effective solution to one kind of injury: the ACL tear. There is a growing body of research that supports the effectiveness of certain types of exercise programs in reducing lower extremity injuries in athletes, particularly injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in athletes who participate in cutting and jumping sports. Some studies also show a decrease in injury rates involving the ankle and hip. There are now dozens of such research studies that have been published which examine numerous variables affecting athletic performance and injury risk. The Program Foundation: ProActive has compiled and carefully studied the available research and developed a unique injury prevention program which blends techniques from those programs which have been shown to be effective in reducing injury rates. Many sports programs around the country are implementing similar training programs in attempt to minimize their injury rates.
